American folk dances and the associated traditional music embody fundamental values of great worth to our culture, our nation and our children. We can promote these values by opening doors for greater participation by new dancers, dance callers and musicians – and, especially, by nurturing newfound love of traditional music and dance by young people. There is no more wholesome way for friends and families to share time together than in the fellowship of dance and making the music of dance. Our job is to use, and thereby preserve as living history, the joyful dances and music we have inherited – and to pass it all on to the next generation.
In this age of amnesia, so many of the traditions and skills which help remind us who we are have been lost, forgotten, or discarded; Capital City Historical Dancers & Musicians was founded specifically to counter this trend. But in recent months we have gotten away from our traditon of teaching historic folk dances, but we are planning to return to that mission. With that in mind, we have established a new routine of having two monthly dance classes for those who are 10 and above to learn more complicated dances and then a family dance on the third month that will give us an opportunity to come together and dance some simple dances that even the youngest amoung us can enjoy as well as dance the new dances we have learned at the classes. Each Family Dance will have a theme, decorations, and refreshments. While instructors will also be available at these dances, the emphasis will still be upon a wholesome, relaxing environment for the whole family where if you can walk you can dance. We will do super simple dances for anyone as well as some of the dances that we have worked on during the classes. We will still do a teaching walk-through before each dance, but if you choose to not come to the classes you will find it easier if you partner with someone who does come. With this mix of Teaching Dances and Family Dances, we hope to promote excellence in dancing while also providing a means for passing on a love of dance to the little ones. |
